Prospective Students
Welcome to Edinburgh University Sports Union
Dear prospective Student,
Welcome to the Edinburgh University world! The University of Edinburgh is not only renowned for its academic excellence but also for its impressive sporting reputation. From your very first day at University, you will automatically be a member of the Sports Union.
There are 65 Clubs at Edinburgh University, ranging all the way from the conventional Rugby or Football to the slightly less conventional Skydiving or Korfball. You can find a full list of our clubs on if you click here. With so many different Clubs, it is possible to try a wide
range of different activities or continue to develop skills you already possess.
Whilst we seek to obtain the best out of all of our athletes, the emphasis is strongly on participation. As such, we strongly stick to our ‘Sport For All’ motto and cater for beginners right through to international athletes. Even if you have never done a sport before, you will be warmly welcomed by all the Sports Clubs– you can play/train with them without having to be in a team. In addition, most Clubs have more than one team in both the British University leagues and the local leagues to allow all standards of athletes to compete.
The Edinburgh University Sports Union is consistently the premier sporting institution in Scotland and amongst the Top 5 British Universities, finishing 5th in 2007/08.
The Sports Union handbook (which can be obtained from our office, 48 Pleasance, 0131 650 2346) is a useful guide to all our Clubs, as is our website. For a chance to see and question them for yourself, we annually hold a Sports Fair on the Wednesday and Thursday of Freshers’ Week. All the Club websites are full of information and you'll be able to find all the contact details you may wish on there.
If you would like any more information about the Sports Union and its Clubs, please contact us at sports.union@ed.ac.uk or sift through our website!
Excellence....Success....Sport For All....welcome to the University of Edinburgh world.

Our Clubs
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edinburgh University Archery Club is not just the current British Champion, not to mention dominating the sport at a University level; no, the Archery Club is a student Club, has laughs, goes out for drinks, and endlessly socializes, forming a little, tight band of friends, open to anyone and everyone.
So you’ve never considered the sport? You have never shot an arrow before? So what? Our Club offers the most qualified training for beginners, which means that, apart from being a laugh, it's also professional, ensuring that you get an opportunity to pursue the sport at any level you desire. This can range from shooting for fun to becoming an Olympic athlete; it’s all possible!
As well as the frequent Coaching sessions for novices, where you learn the skills to shoot and get to know all the other beginners and senior members, there are also many social events. The lifeline of these is the weekly trip to the pub, on top of that there is more drinks, pub-crawls, cinema visits, Club dinners and parties, and all the small socials between the friends you’ll find within the Archery membership.
All in all, we are serious competitors, but not so serious people!

AthleticsAtheltics
The Athletics Club is one of the oldest Clubs of its kind in Scotland, as well as one of the most successful. We regularly deal out a good whipping to the other Universities in Scotland, and compete against the best of Britain at the BUSA Championships, indoors and outdoors. We also compete for the Appleton Trophy against Glasgow University every year.
Training is offered throughout the week to suit whatever your ability: from circuit training to weight training, track sessions to hill sessions, and even a few long runs. We also offer the chance for athletes to gain coaching qualifications, or to develop their skills and progress to higher levels.
Outside of training we have a very active social scene, and pride ourselves on being an easily approachable and friendly Club. Our weekly social is after Circuits on a Monday evening. There are two crazy annual Dinners before Christmas and exams and we have our fair share of parties, pub crawls, not to mention the infamous Chunder Mile!
If you have any questions feel free to contact us or come and see us at the Sports Fair in Freshers' Week.

BadmintonBadminton
The Badminton Club is one of the largest Clubs in the Sports Union. It caters for everyone from complete beginners to nationally competitive players. The Club plays three times a week: Tuesdays 19:30-21:30, Wednesdays 13:00-15:00 and Saturdays 09:00-13:00 in St. Leonards sports hall; shuttles and rackets are provided. There is also the offer of free coaching from our nationally recognised coach Mike Louden at the Saturday morning session.
Players usually go to the pub after Club sessions, with free food and cheap drinks courtesy of our sponsor pub, and frequent social occasions are organised by our committed/crazy Social Secretaries, both alcohol and non-alcohol based.
The team trains separately from the Club, but will often be there on Club nights too. The team plays in the local Lothian League and Scottish Universities leagues and Scottish and British Universities tournaments, receiving some considerable success in the 06/07 season.
There is also the opportunity to play abroad with trips to ISBTs (International Student Badminton Tournament) with destinations all over Europe for players of all abilities, combined with some drinking as well.
Come and see us at the Sports Fair or use the contacts supplied to find out more.

BasketballBasketball
Edinburgh University Basketball Club is not just a sporting association; it’s a way of life. We are a team who plays hard on the court and we are a group who party harder off it. Arguably the most successful Basketball University Club in Scotland, the men have been Scottish Champions 3 of the last 4 years and won the inaugural Scottish Universities Cup this past year. The women have been Scottish Champions longer than anyone can remember and lost out narrowly in the final of the Scottish Universities Cup. In this forthcoming year, we aim to field 5 teams, competing at University, National and local League level.
Joining the Club does require a level of commitment with at least 2 practices and 1 game every week however, this is rewarded with a whole range of playing opportunities and a great group of friends.
Only one question remains…do you quaffle!?
BoatBoat
If you want to keep fit at University, meet an incredibly wide variety of people, and have something that looks great on your CV, then rowing is the sport for you. Or if you just want to mess about on the river on a summer's afternoon then we cater for all aspirations! The Boat Club is one of the largest and the most active sports Clubs in the Sports Union. It is one of the only Clubs that cater for the complete novice through to the hardened international, and regularly wins events at all levels, including Men's and Women's Scottish Universities Champions in 2007. The home-grown novice squads are also consistently competitive with the rest of the UK. The Boat Club will also take you racing in Inverness, Nottingham, London and Boston (USA), and training camps have, in the past few years, been held in Germany and Northern Ireland.
And on top of that, the social life ain't bad either, with deals at The Crags and The Golf Tavern we regularly meet for after training drinks, and there are several Balls, the Annual Dinner, and the Edinburgh Glasgow University Boat Race. See our website for more details!
BoxingBoxing
The Edinburgh University Boxing Club is consistently one of the most successful University Boxing Clubs in the UK. Year after year we produce Scottish, British, and British & Irish champions. These results are to be expected when one considers that our coaching team consists of a former professional boxer, a former amateur world kickboxing champion, and a former Captain of the Club. Training is intense and on competitive training nights nothing less than 100% effort is expected. But it is important to remember that almost every champion that the Club has produced had never boxed before they joined the Club. For those simply wishing to get fit and have fun, we run 2 classes a week coached by Committee members for those who wish to learn to box without stepping into the ring.
We also have a very active social side to the Club, having regular Cinners, nights-out and other events. The highlight of the Club's calendar is the annual Fight Night in which our boxers compete against fighters from other University and town Clubs. This is always a hugely popular night, allowing boxers to compete without the pressure of a Tournament in front of a supportive home crowd.

CanoeCanoe
"…there is NOTHING--absolutely nothing--half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats." (Ratty, The Wind in the Willows)
You know what, the rat had a point. On becoming a member you’ll find yourself in one of the University's best Clubs.
We are currently the only Canoe Club in Scotland to run 2 trips each and every weekend and the University is well placed to take advantage of Scotland’s whitewater, considered some of the best in the world.
As well as the weekend trips a weekly pool session is also on offer to give paddlers the opportunity to practise in the safety and warmth of the University pool. Many of our paddlers are qualified coaches and will be happy to help those interested in improving their river running, playboating or canoe polo skills.
If getting wet isn’t really your thing, the Club has an active social scene (catering to all levels of drinking ability!). Weekly socials provide an excellent opportunity for drinking, theme nights and general top grade banter.
So whether you’ve never set foot in a kayak before or you view your boat as a fifth limb; come one, come all, come boating.

CricketCricket
A fun, competitive and progressive Club, for beginners and experienced players alike; we boast three Men's teams, all playing within the Scottish University Leagues. The 1st and 2nd XI's can also progress to BUSA competitions, playing against top class English Universities. 1st XI Representation also gives you the chance of being selected for the Scottish Universities Team.
The Club also puts a lot of emphasis on indoor cricket. Semester 1 sees the CSE Sports Hall used for coaching and indoor competitions. In Semester 2, we hold nets at the Scottish Cricket Academy, and enter a number of indoor competitions. A highlight of last year was winning the Scottish Universities Indoor Tournament. This year, we will look to defend the title, and to play in the BUSA Indoors in Newcastle. The 1st XI will also be looking to tour, with Holland currently the top destination.
Probably the greatest development in the Club last year was the successful launch of a Girls' team. This is largely made up of enthusiastic beginners, so if you feel you fit the mould, give cricket a try!
As a Club, we will also be looking to continue with coaching development; if you are interested, we can help subsidise your training.

Okay guys a new year for some of you a return for others….regardless curling is deffo the route forward!! Last season was awesome a good turnout, with membership increases that have not been seen in the last few years, and a lot of success as we secured our place as British Uni’s champions.
So why curling you may ask? Well as a great social sport and membership varying from beginner, who have never seen a curling stone before, to old hands who were probably at the Ice Rink having a couple of practice slides before learning to walk. So if it is a new sport……..…something traditionally Scottish or just a new group of drinking buddies you can find all of this at Edinburgh University Curling Club so come along any or every Wednesday and have a throw!!

CyclingCycling
The Bike Club caters for all riders, from spanking the tarmac to snaking through tree lined single track or firing down rocky chutes and launching 20 foot gaps.Mountain biking in the Pentland Hills and circuits out of town for the roadies guarantee a sweaty bit of fun twice a week. Other trips regularly head to the downhill tracks at Innerleithen and further afield to the rest of the Seven Stanes trail-centres. We also head to the Highlands and Northern England, usually over a weekend featuring beer, banter and bikes.
Racing features the hard fought BUSA Championships, upholding Edinburgh’s reputation for hard riding and hard partying. The Winter Wet and Wild downhill series, 24 hour and marathon XC races and TLI Road Series keep the competition going for the rest of the year and there is always the summer challenge racing against the best in the land at the Scottish XC and DH races. These events have a range of levels from fun to expert.
The weekly pub session happens on a Thursday evening with the possibility of some fine disco fever and beater themed debauchery.
Cross Country, Downhill, Road. Just riding. It’s all bikes. It’s all good.

FencingFencing
Out of all the sports in the world, none has quite the dramatic attraction of fencing. The art of fencing has not been lost to the world’s bygone musketeers, nor is it confined to movies or plays. It is alive and well, and has developed into a powerful sport.
The Edinburgh University Fencing Club is active in competitions, and has some fencers that are on the International level. The sport itself is a great form of exercise, but moreover it’s a lot of fun. The thrill of a match is an adrenaline rush that has to be experienced to be truly understood, while the camaraderie within the Club is second to none. The Club caters to fencers of all experience, from beginners to those with years under their belt. For those looking for a chance of prestige, the Ladies team is in the BUSA Premier League with the Men’s catching up fast, while the Club has a history of medals in both team and individual competitions.
The Club also has a strong social side, with annual karaoke and salsa nights, Club Dinners, and generally going out and having a ridiculously good time.

EUAFC run 4 teams that compete in SUS, BUSA and local League competitions. The SUS competition commences in October and each team competes against other Scottish Universities every Wednesday in Semester 1 before the British Universities knock-outs begin in February should performances in the Scottish Leagues merit. Outwith the BUSA programme, the Club's teams play in various local Leagues predominantly at the weekends: the 1st XI in the East of Scotland Premier Division; the 2nd XI in the Lothian & Edinburgh Amateur Premier Division; the U21 team in the East of Scotland Youth League; and the 4th XI in the Sports Union's Intra-Mural competition.
All teams train and play at the University's Peffermill Playing Fields and training takes place every Monday and Thursday from 18:45-21:00. Players are expected to be available for both night's training and the games on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons. As well as the focus on competitive success every effort is made in providing our members with a memorable social experience too and newcomers will soon find this when they join in the traditional post-match get-together at The Three Sisters, where many a beer shall be shared whilst debating whether Kaka would get a game for us.

The Club has enjoyed much success over the years both in the SUSF top League and in BUSA, making a name for itself as one of the best University teams in Scotland. The Club aims to play a high standard of football throughout the season but also places a big emphasis on the social side, making it fun, welcoming and a good laugh. The Club welcomes new players every season, both established players but also those wanting to improve their game.

Gliding
Gliding is an extremely exciting and rewarding sport. If you have ever wanted to fly, then this is your chance! Flying with the University Club is cheap and perfectly affordable for students - and you will get to hang out with a great bunch of people. We're outdoorsy, but easy going and not overly competitive, and we're admittedly unique!
The Gliding Club runs trial lessons every day during Freshers Week which cost £35. This includes transport from and to Edinburgh, a long flight and membership of the Club for the academic year. (Subsequent flights usually cost less than £10.) By now your probably wondering what gliding is. Gliders are safe, unpowered aircraft with rigid wings. They are launched either by winch or with powered aircraft. To stay up, glider pilots search for areas of rising air. Flights over hundreds of kilometres are possible. You will learn about the weather, controlling the aircraft, air law, using the radio, inspecting and handling the aircraft and more. Our dedicated and experienced instructors will teach you the ropes!

Edinburgh University Golf Club is one of the most active and prosperous sports Clubs within the University. We have three competitive teams all playing regular golf throughout the University calendar and last year was one of our most successful. Our First Team finished second only behind Stirling in the Winter League and the second team with a strong squad showed great potential for a successful year this time around. However, the best performance of the year came form the Girl’s squad; sweeping the boards by winning the Women’s Scottish Conference and the Scottish Universities Team Scratch and Handicap Championships.
We have strong connections with many Golf Clubs in and around Edinburgh and we play our golf competitive fixtures at Gullane Golf Club. The affiliation with these Clubs gives us reduced green fees throughout the academic year. Our fixture list does not stop at competitive matches; we have an extensive social fixture list which includes matches against Muirfield, Royal Troon and the R&A. We hold weekly range sessions for all standards of golfers on a Friday evening where coaching is provided. For further information visit our website or contact Fergus, Jack or Emma.

Hot Air BalloonHot Air Balloon
If it's the "beautiful game" you're after, you're reading the wrong entry.
Meanwhile, for the rest of you literati out there, how about a spot of ballooning - a far more intellectually, and even physically, stimulating activity. (If it's spiritual stimulation you're after, you'll probably be otherwise occupied of a Sunday morning).
Cruising serenely 'twixt the broad green tree-tops, dipping the peat stained lochans and soaring, supremely, o'er Auld Reekie's soot-dark fug. The possibilities really are endless. And that's only the flying.
Haring 'cross-country, in hot pursuit, only to find yourself coaxing the Land Rover through mud, mire and manure (because the silly buggers have landed in the arse-end of no-where) is, in my opinion, three times as much fun and almost twice as exciting.
With countless local flights to whet the appetite and the Borders jaunts to sharpen it further, the national, nay, international (well continental - like the Bentley) tours should sate it entirely.
All this, plus the hair-raising stories and rather too much else besides, is all to be had over a basin of gut-rot at our weekly pub meeting.
If you're still reading, we'll see you there.

Judo
Judo, literally "the gentle way". Judo is a Japanese art of self-defence and the first martial art to gain Olympic recognition. Judo is an inexpensive, year-round activity that appeals to people from all walks of life.
At the University Judo Club we aim to cater for a range of levels - from complete beginners through to Dan grade black belts, and allow people to progress at their own rate. The Club participates in regular League matches against other Scottish Universities and takes both Men and Women’s teams to the British Universities Championships each year.
The Club’s current coach is a 4th Dan who has won medals at both Commonwealth and European competitions and was a member of the British squad for more than ten years.
We have a friendly, inclusive atmosphere and provide many social events throughout the year - as well as a trip to the pub after every training session. If you are interested we offer free Tuesday evening sessions for beginners during the first three weeks of the Semester - so come along and give us a try.

Jitsu is a martial art based on the traditional styles of Jiu Jitsu that originated in medieval Japan. The core of the art comprises a system of throws, joint locks and strikes. Based on the principal of using an aggressor’s energy to their own disadvantage, Jitsu skills can be used by men, women and children to counter aggressive situations.
Jitsu is a progressive martial art that offers a means of personal and physical development, as well as an effective system of self-defence. Regular training can help to improve strength, fitness, flexibility, co-ordination and posture. Most people find that Jitsu also improves their self-esteem and self-confidence. Taking part in Jitsu is a fantastic way to meet new friends and offers a vibrant social life out of Club training, with many events organised throughout the year.
The best way to find out more is to come along and join in. Even our instructors were novices once! Our aim is to provide a friendly environment. Don’t worry if you are not at the peak of fitness either. All you need to start is some loose clothing and a willingness to learn. Bring a friend along too if you like! Beginners are always welcome!

Karate (Shotokan)Shotokan Karate
The Shotokan Karate Club has the strong belief that to become expert at Martial Arts you must first have a strong basis to start from. There is no point in running before you can walk. So our sessions focus on training our beginners to become strong, flexible and fast. So that the basic techniques they learn are applicable, before going on to learn and understand more advanced techniques. Therefore, in our sessions we teach classes in kihon (basics), kata, kumite (sparring) and basic self defence. However, our classes are split and so more senior kareteka will still be challenged.
This sport is particularly great because you can start as a complete beginner and become extremely skilled within a few years. It will improve your fitness, your focus and your self-confidence.
The success of our Club is particularly seen in competition. Many of our most skilled competitive Club members have never done karate previous to University. We're particularly proud of our achievements as a joint team, with the Shukokai Karate Club, at the British Universities Championships.

Karate (Shukokai)Shukokai Karate
Based on Shito Ryu, Shukokai Karate is a blend of traditional knowledge and modern sports science. Much of our training takes the form of partner work, allowing students to learn through dynamic application of techniques, which encompasses the uses of strikes, locks and throws- all incorporating the use of vital points and with its foundations in traditional Kata.An award winning team with a diverse martial arts background, instruction is led by Steven Webster (4th Dan and PWC Coach of the Year 2002-3), accompanied by Gerard O’Dea (4th Dan) and Dave Orr (2nd Dan and PWC Coach of the Year 2004-5). Together they bring us many world-class Seminar Instructors, including Rick Clark (8th Dan), Mark Kline (7th Dan) and Dan Anderson (8th Dan).
We are also the most successful University sports Karate Club in Britain; winning BUSA for 5 of the last 7 years (jointly with EU Shotokan), and an unprecedented 9 Scottish Universities Championships in a row. This success has been rewarded by a CSE/EUSU Team Bursary and many awards, including the prestigious EUSU Lillywhite Shield for most outstanding Club of the Year in 2005-06.
Shukokai Karate also enjoys drinking, dancing, Bryan Adams, and the works of Katie Price. For More Information: E-mail – shukokai@ed.ac.uk
KendoKendo
Kendo is the Japanese martial art of fencing, the “Way of the Sword”. Arising from the Fudal sword schools of Japan, it is both a traditional martial art aimed at cultivating the self, and a highly dynamic, competitive sport. Kendo teaches purely sword forms, with little body contact. No kicking, punching or throwing, just the sword, with an emphasis on correct form over speed and strength. It is very safe, and suitable for both men and women, who train together.
Edinburgh University Kendo Club is one of the more established university Kendo clubs in the UK, achieving its best ever result of second place at last year's University Championships. Beginners are particularly well looked after through a structured course taking new students all the way from basic footwork to free sparring and competition. The vast majority of the Club's membership began their practice at University with no prior experience.
The Club is a social Club as much as a sporting Club, heading to the pub after practice and organising regular social events. There are plenty of travel opportunities also, with even beginners attending numerous events around Britain and further afield into Ireland and Italy last year.
KorfballKorfball
Korfball is one of the fastest growing sports in the world and, although you may not have heard of it before, is massively popular amongst Universities across Britain, and the world! Most students come to the game without any prior experience, and that simply means everyone starts out at the same level. Easy to learn, tough to master, Korfball incorporates Basketball and Netball rules to produce a fast-paced, exciting game in which boys and girls compete on the same team.
The Club has something for every level of player; if you’re looking for fun, regular exercise, come along to our weekly training sessions – if you’re looking to put a bit more in, come along to one of the many Tournaments the Club attends – across Britain and Europe!
And while we play hard on court, we play harder off! Highly-trained Social Secretaries, work tirelessly to keep EUKC members lives full of pub-crawls, flat-parties, and weirder social shenanigans too amazing to list here. We have a great record, in the local League, across the country and across Europe! And while winning trophies is impressive, we’re way more concerned about having a good time; try something new and unique – look no further than EUKC!

Edinburgh University Men’s Lacrosse is one of the most accomplished Clubs in Britain. Since its conception in 2001 the Club has won three grand slam victories in the Anglo-Scots Lacrosse League as well as being ranked the number one University side in 2005. We instil an atmosphere of excellence and competitiveness alongside grassroots level training for those just beginning the sport of lacrosse. Last season the Club extended its development policy by enlisting the help of an experienced and qualified Coach, in addition to this we completed in the first national BUSA Championships, another step forward for this rapidly developing sport. The Club has something to offer you whether you are an all-star player or you’ve never even seen the sport played before.
For More Information: E-mail – lacrosse.men@ed.ac.uk
The Women’s Lacrosse Club is a highly successful Club. We currently have two teams; in the '06-'07 season the First Team won the BUSA Championships and the Second Team won the BUSA Trophy. This is the first time one University has ever won both titles! We are looking to expand our Club this year and make a third team which would hopefully play in a local league. This would mean that the Club could cater for a wider spectrum of ability levels - from beginners to the elite. Whichever team appeals to you, the Women’s Lacrosse Club can guarantee and excellent social life as they have close links with many of the other sports Clubs.

There are many forms of competitive driving well within the budget of the average student - in fact, this is the whole idea underpinning EUMSC. Through the Club, you can try your hand at navigational rallying (a crew of a driver and navigator solve clues in order to follow a route on a map), autotesting (performing manoeuvres round a coned circuit) and marshalling (ensuring the safety of drivers and spectators at all the country's top events). Add regular go-karting outings into the mix, and you have a whole range of motorsport opportunities for the cost of only a few pints. However, you don't need the experience of Colin McRae in order to compete with EUMSC. In fact, you don't even need a car for the bulk of our activities. Our team of experts will be running navigation classes over the course of the year, and the Club’s autotest aces will have you performing handbrake turns and reverse flicks in no time. Whilst we may be a highly competitive Club, it's not all about long test sessions and 6am starts - EUMSC has a thriving social scene, and meets every Thursday from 8pm. So, whether you fancy yourself as the next Schumacher or just need an excuse to get a parking permit at Pollock, come along and give student motorsport a go.
For More Information: E-mail – motorsport@ed.ac.ukIf you’re looking for adventure then the Mountaineering Club is where you will find it. We have a packed programme of days and weekends away with people into rock climbing, indoor climbing, scrambling, winter climbing, fell running or just pleasant bimbling in the hills. We have a huge range of abilities and ambitions in the Club, so whether you’ve never climbed before but would like to learn, or you’re gracing the front covers of climbing magazines, or you just like drinking in remote places then there is something for you.
For those of you that haven’t tried it, mountaineering is pretty unique among sports. Sharing cramped tents, beautiful views and memorable midnight walk-ins is a sure way to make lasting friendships. The rewards from achieving an objective however big or small are great and there will be many tall tales to regale back in the pub. Not to mention it is a great and genuinely exciting way to keep fit.
There is a gruelling social schedule to complement the bi weekend Meets which include beerienteering, ceilidhs so lively they are almost dangerous and the infamous GBH parties where anything could happen. If any of the above appeals then try us out and you will be guaranteed some memorable experiences………
This year the University Netball Club will be changing in many ways and we want you to be part of it.
If you are an awesome player we can give you the best competition that Scotland can offer as EUNC1 has been promoted into the BUSA (that’s British Unis) Premier North League, which means we will be meeting the likes of Loughborough and Northumbria! As well as this you will be playing in the Kukri National Netball League, Scottish Cup and National Clubs competitions. For those of us who are not quite at that standard but want to play competitively you can play for any of our other 4 teams which play in both local and University Leagues and compete to a high standard. All 5 teams train twice a week and play twice a week so be prepared!
If this is not your bag and you just want to play, meet friends and have fun, we will be running a recreation Club on Wednesday night for the first time so please come along if you want to continue or learn to play. But at our Club it is not all about the netball… we also like a good night out, and with a social calendar bursting with fancy dress nights, formal Dinners, informal mayhem and snakebites galore, you won't want to miss it. Trials are on the Friday and Saturday of Freshers Week for teams… see you there!

Sport at Edinburgh University is not only about the activity, it’s also about capturing the action. The Sports Union Publicity Officer is always looking for volunteers to write match reports and to photograph matches. Any volunteers can write as much or little as they like, on any sports they like. All reports will be published here on the News section of the website.
Photographs are vital for the publicity of Edinburgh University sport. This website, posters and screensavers, all important for the promotion of the University sport all require the best sporting photos that can be got. While EUSU has a great stock of photos already, they will soon become dated with old kit and players. Additionally, many clubs rely on fresh photos to show their sponsors. Thus the importance of photographers to the Sports Union is massive.
In previous years, the photographers and reporters have served as match day reporters at a host of major events including the 'Burgh Varsity's and the Scottish Cup football ties at Cove Rangers and Cowdenbeath. This has included free Press entry and travel to these games and gets unimaginable closeness to the matches as they progress.
The Sports Union, also works in co-ordination with other student publications to publicise the sport at Edinburgh University, if you wish to learn more about getting involved as a match reporter or photographer then e-mail the Sports Union Publicity Officer at eusu.publicity@ed.ac.uk
We're one of the biggest University Clubs in Britain and can currently claim to be the best. BUSA Champions two years running we are a very active club with runners ranging from those who train at least six days a week and booze about twice a year, to those who do it the other way round!
The basics of orienteering:
You are presented with a map on the start line and have to navigate around the checkpoints as fast as possible. Simple! For the elite this will mean running hard, where mistakes losing seconds can cost you the race. For the newcomer you might spend a lot of time running in the wrong direction and getting lost, but that's half the fun!
We train and compete regularly all over Britain and beyond, have training in Edinburgh most nights of the week, and put on a series of events throughout the year geared towards beginners. Add that to a regular social calendar with some legendary nights, you have something for everyone. So if you want the challenge of navigating in some of Scotland's wild, beautiful and awe-inspiring places, or just want to get fit and have some banter, then come along!

You don’t have to be experienced to shoot a rifle. You might just want to try something new or different. If that’s the case, then the Rifle Club is where you want to be! You’ll find us in our own fully maintained range within the CSE, with our well maintained and modern set of rifles and free coaching throughout the year. We are one of the most successful Clubs in the Sports Union, with lots of Scottish and British Universities trophies in both small-bore and full-bore disciplines, both of which everyone can try.
You don’t have to be fantastic to join this Club. You don’t even have to enter competitions, but if you want to, there’s something for everyone, whether it’s just for fun, against members of our own Club, or against other Universities. We’re not just about shooting. Beyond the range we are a very social Club - you’ll find us in the pub after all of our evening training sessions, and we hold an Annual Ball as well as lots of other events. If you’re interested and want to find out more, email Brian or Rosy, pop along to the Sports Fair in Freshers Week, or visit our website!

For those who don't know, Roller Hockey is a fast paced and exciting sport similar to ice hockey. It consists of two teams of four players and one goalie with the object of the game being to score as many goals against the opposing team a possible within a given time period.
We play weekly in the SURHL (Scottish Universities Roller Hockey League) and also take part in friendlies and various Competitions throughout the year. A particular highlight this year was finishing as runners up in the British Uni Nationals. The ethos of the Club is very much to create a relaxed and fun atmosphere, as we feel this is most conducive to success.
We train regularly, catering for varying abilities; utter beginners to advanced. As with most sports Clubs, socialising is also an important part of our make-up. Come rain or shine, the banter is guaranteed to be legendry! So, whether new to the sport or already a convert, we implore you to come along!

The Men's Rugby Club is one of the largest Clubs in Scotland which provides for all levels. With around 80 members, joining the Club is a great chance to meet people with similar interests in addition to meeting other Clubs with the socials we hold. We have a busy season with playing in National Scottish Leagues on a Saturday and University games on a Wednesday for some of the season. The Club trains twice a week at Peffermill Playing Fields (Monday & Thursday 6.30-8.00pm). The 1st team currently sits in the fourth league in Scotland (National 1), in addition to performing well in BUSA each year and we strive to keep improving.
Over the summer we enjoyed a two week, successful tour to Chile & Argentina and are planning a couple of mini-tours for the upcoming season. If you miss Fresher trials but are interested please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Shinty is Scotland’s National sport, a high-speed and skilful game with similarities to the Irish sport beloved of Guinness adverts; hurling. The game has sometimes been described as ‘hockey without rules’ but the lack of restrictions results in a hard, fast exciting game with a big enjoyment factor. Combining both experienced and new players who fancy the challenge, the Men’s and Women’s teams offer the chance to join successful sides competing across Scotland. Last season saw both teams place well in the SUS League and ten members of the Club received SUS caps. As a smaller Club we offer great team spirit both on and off the park and we ensure everyone gets involved in the action. This season sees the opportunity to get involved in some hurling and camogie development, a first at the University, so if you are interested come down to see us at training.
Training: Tuesdays 4 - 545pm at Peffermill Astro and Wednesdays 2 - 4pm on the Meadows
Matches: Saturdays
On the social front we are sponsored by Dropkick Murphy’s and are the organisers of legendary Shinty Club Socials believing in celebrations or commiserations depending on the result! We are always looking for new members so if you are a current player who has moved to Edinburgh or a complete novice who wants to hear more about the game, come and see us at the Sports Fair.

Forget Nemesis, forget Oblivion, forget any theme park you've ever been to. This is the greatest thrill ride there is!
We specialise in taking students with no experience and getting them qualified to jump out of planes. We drive up to St. Andrews on Friday so that you’ll be ready on Saturday to go through your Course, and on Sunday we’ll get you up in the air (weather permitting!). Soon after that we can have you doing back-flips, barrel-rolls and jumping with other people. When you get your skydiving licence you can skydive not only anywhere in the UK, but anywhere in the world!
We are Scotland’s No.1 Club in the British Universities Championship, and with good reason. The Skydiving Club isn't just about jumping. During the weekend Courses we often have parties and during the year we have pub crawls and theme nights. We are renowned for our drinking games and can drink any other Club under the table. If you want to join the most exciting Club in the University, do one jump or do hundreds, then come along any Tuesday to the Crags (opposite Pollock Halls) from 8pm.

Snowsports
Edinburgh University Snowsports Club is the largest and most exciting Club at the University and therefore THE Club to be a part of. Whether you’re a sponsored rider, a complete beginner, or somewhere in between the two our Club will cater for your needs.
During the first semester we run a bus service every week from George Square up to the local dry slope; Hillend. Once up there, you can take part in lessons, race training and freestyle jam sessions, all of which the Club will organise for you. We also run a ‘learn to ride in a day’ event where total novices get a decent shot at the sports at low prices, so keep your eyes peeled for that one.
Also as soon as there is snow we run buses up to the Scottish Highlands from as little as £1 return. Our Club has mountains of brand spanking new equipment in our lockup that is available to hire for our members.
Our Freestyle and Race teams are currently dominating the British Universities scene, so if you want glory and bragging rights over the rest of Britain - this is a must if you are already a confident rider. With the success of last year’s freestyle production ‘get oot’ look out for this year’s instalment and get involved with it. You could be a hero! Over the academic year we run three trips to the French Alps at stupidly cheap all-inclusive prices. A Christmas Break, another at Easter and finally the British Universities Snowsports Championships (BUSC). BUSC isn’t just for competitors though, it is the most fun and frolicking week of everybody’s University year.
Apart from all the skiing and boarding, we run a hectic social calendar throughout the year; with regular Thursday night socials at Rush, including really cheap drinks prices for our members along with the Party Bus, the Snow Ball, Competitors meals, Pub Ski and plenty of fancy dress opportunities you’d be mad to miss us at the Sports Fair. Follow the tunes!
Get involved! Get Oot!

The Sub-Aqua Club is awesome. We're biased, but you can't dismiss this statement until you've tried it! We have so much to offer; we can train a novice to dive right to instructor level. We train on the British Sub-Aqua Club scheme, but if you've dived before, whatever agency you might be with (PADI, NAUI, etc.), there is a simple cross-over procedure. You can be out in no time and gaining experience with new buddies, whether you've done a course on holiday, or you've got 1073 minutes "bottom time". You won't find better value than at Uni. We have cheap kit hire, discounts and our instructors do it for free!
There's an abundance of exciting things to discover, whether fish, octopus and lobsters are your thing, or great ship-shaped hunks of metal. We go to Skye, Oban, St. Abbs, Scapa Flow…anywhere and everywhere. The social life rivals the best, the highlight being our legendary Burns night celebrations, plus much more shenanigans throughout the year. Also not to be missed are our underwater hockey sessions each week. "The Hippos" are a growing team, and we're going places in the world of "Octopush".
Come, find out more at the Sports Fair.

If you like water, love to have fun, and want to be part of a really friendly and thriving Club, then come along and join us at the pool.
Last year was the most successful year in our history, and we want to make next year even better. We have excellent teams in Swimming and Water Polo, and compete in the Scottish Universities League as well as British Universities competitions. This year the Women’s Polo team came 3rd in BUSA, the Men came 4th and the Swimming team came 5th, but we are always looking for talented swimmers and polo players to improve further.
But we aren’t all about competitions. We welcome social members who just want to train to keep fit and have fun, and since we have training 7 times a week, you have the flexibility to choose when you want to come. We love to introduce new players to Water Polo, most of the Women’s team hadn’t played before University, but more experienced players are also greatly appreciated. The social activities of our Club are infamous and we encourage everyone to take part. Starting off with flat golf at the beginning of October, and including Club dinners, the Scottish Universities Ball and BBQs in the summer, we make sure that we are always enjoying ourselves.

Ultimate Frisbee is a fast paced, exciting team sport played by guys and girls. It takes aspects of American football, netball, and many other team sports and creates a sport unlike any other. The rules are simple, although the strategies complex, and there are no referees, relying upon players sportsmanship to adjudicate on fouls.

The Weightlifting Club at the University of Edinburgh aims to provide a safe and effective area for all people who enjoy lifting weights to come together and train in an environment that is suited to high level performance strength training. The Club has two facets that focus on the two separate disciplines of weight training. Those are power lifting (bench press, squat, and dead lift) and weightlifting (snatch and clean and jerk). We travel around the country to several competitions year round and maintain a high standard of competition among our competing lifters. Currently our Club has an excellent coaching staff that are all either previous lifting champions or still currently lifting.
If you’re looking for a place to train that offers support, advice, and information or if you are using weights as cross training for another sport, the Edinburgh University Weightlifting Club is the place to train. We offer unique training facilities found in the CSE that allow lifters to utilize a wide range of specialized equipment that is unique to the sport of weightlifting. New lifters are always welcome to join and lifters of all abilities are encouraged to train with us.
Windsurfing and Surfing
Scotland is somewhat remote from the stereotypical image of tanned Hawaiians gliding through tropical water, being cooed on by perfectly formed females on the beach! Whilst big waves do exist, the water is far from tropical and if Scottish surfers are lucky, their expertly executed moves may attract the attention of a passing seagull.
EUWSC will kit you out with wetsuits, boards and sails, and our experienced members are always willing to help beginners catch their first wave or through their first carve gybe. Day trips are run to local Lochs for windsurfers, and East Coast beaches for surfers. Weekend trips to Machrihanish, Thurso and Firbush run throughout the year, providing a chance to improve your skills, get a break form the city, and bond with fellow water-lovers over a few beer funnels. We also trek to Newquay and Tiree for the annual Surfing and Windsurfing Championships.
We have 1pm lunchtime meetings even Wednesday at our chosen hangout for the year in order to organize trips and exchange gossip. (To find out the location this year, you'll have to come along to the Sports Fair or check out our website!) Thursday night socials have been known to lead us on 3-legged Hawaiian pub crawls, flat golf, Ceilidhs and Funk nights with live music! Membership includes Club kit and discounts at our chosen sponsored bars and shops, so get involved!

EUSU also recognises the sport of ANGLING.

Intra-Mural Sport
If you like sport but don't reckon you're the new Pelé or Flintoff; if you like sport but don't reckon you could run a marathon; if you like sport but hate being bossed about by your coach, then join up for Intra Mural sport this year.
Everyone's heard the old adage "it's not the winning, it's the taking part that counts" - and nothing could more perfectly summarise the Intra-Mural sports programme.
Sport at Edinburgh isn't just about winning - it's also about students enjoying sport in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Already the biggest in Scotland - the EUSU Intra-Mural programme is constantly growing in size and variety; a testament to its success. So dig out those trainers, polish your banter, find a good team name (recent gems include "Yer Maw", "FC Beercelona", "Arthur's Feet" and so on) and get involved! If your ego can take losing a football match by more than ten goals (trust the writer - this is sadly possible), your stamina can take getting up at 7am on Sunday to cross Edinburgh (this doesn't happen very often - honest!), your guts can take the post match celebrations and most importantly you enjoy having fun, then this programme is for you!
Football (Mens and Womens), Basketball, Cricket (summer term), Hockey, Netball, Rugby and Squash are all up for grabs, and fixtures are played weekly. Although it's all about having fun and participating , there are league tables (and bragging rights) at stake, so be sure to avoid mid table mediocrity or relegation dogfights! Get stuck in with a bunch of mates, but be quick, the leagues are very quickly fully subscribed. Registration forms are available at the Sports Union office.

The Student View
It's not just those of us involved in the administration of the Sports Union that are convined that Edinburgh is a great sporting environment. Here we have the views of a selection of people from our top athletes and club presidents, to club members and Intra-mural players. We hope this helps you in making your decision and who knows you may just meet us at the Sports Union ball in a couple of years time for the the best night at university.
