Election Adress:
I am a 3rd year Sports and Recreation Management student running to be Vice President -Intramural in the upcoming Sports Union elections. Having participated in IM football since my first year I have seen the importance of a strong IM system on sport at Edinburgh. Furthered by my role as Men’s IM Football Officer this current year I have been introduced to the operational aspects of the IM system. This role has included communication with teams and captains across 5’s and 11’s Men’s football and the Sports Union, also assigning referees weekly has given me the strong administrative qualities that suit this role. Supported by roles in Operations Management at the Boroughmuir Bears and communications fostered as Secretary of the Cricket Club. With relevant experience in the sporting field, partnered alongside an understanding of the IM system, this places me strongly for VP Intramural.
Manifesto:
Intramural sport is a backbone to sport at Edinburgh University, demonstrating the values that the Sports Union hold at its core. Across all sports offered, IM sport offers a competitive environment mixed with a social element that develops community. The continued success of the Intramural system represents the strong sporting structure of Edinburgh University as a whole.
Therefore, I am honoured to present my vision for the role of Vice President of Intramural Sport, centred around the core principles of community, accessibility, and participation.
Community:
I believe that intramural sports are more than just games; they are opportunities to build connections, foster friendships, and strengthen communities. As Vice President, I will prioritise community-building initiatives that bring students together both on and off the field. Whether through social events, team-building activities, or community service projects, I am committed to creating a supportive and inclusive environment where every member of IM sport is valued.
Accessibility:
Intramural sport offers a wide range of opportunities for students and is held up through the development or continuation of teams within the system. It is therefore important to expand our offerings for teams at the University: the more societies, sports clubs and colleges that are involved in the IM system, the more students that can be introduced to IM Sport. Financially, IM sport is an excellent initiative in removing barriers that clubs can place on students, this partnered with the community and environment, presents a more relaxed and accessible way to play sport at Edinburgh.
Participation:
At the heart of any successful intramural sports program is active participation. As Vice President, I will strive to increase participation rates by offering more active recruitment opportunities and engaging with captains and students to better understand their interests and preferences. I will also work closely with the Intramural Sport Coordinator and Sports Union's Sports Coordinators to cater to the needs of our students. Whether you're a seasoned athlete or trying a sport for the first time, there will be opportunities for everyone to get involved and have fun.
In closing, I am passionate about the role of intramural sports in promoting community, accessibility, and participation at EUSU. With your support, the IM system can continue to develop and nurture sport at Edinburgh, with emphasis on those core values.
