Election Address

Hi, I’m Hannah and I am a 4th year Medical Student. Over the past 4 years I have been involved in a variety of positions in the Sports Union and various societies. I have been an active member of Edinburgh University Netball Club since first year. For the past 4 years I have also been involved with Edinburgh University Medics’ Netball Club, standing as Club Captain for the past two years. Here, I am responsible for coaching over 40 players, who have been successful in the Intramural Leagues.  I oversee social events, fundraisers and fitness sessions. This year I have been the Intramural Netball Coordinator, where I have worked to increase participation and facilitate over 200 girls in 24 teams. I was responsible for ensuring teams were training safely, with COVID officer training and social distancing. This involved weekly updates of guidance changes and implementing the new ‘Modified Netball Rules’.

Manifesto

Sport has always been a huge part of my time at Edinburgh and I have particularly loved being involved in impacting others experience of sport. It has allowed me to not only stay active but has been a great social outlet, and a way of meeting people who I would otherwise not have met.

Having played IM Netball and been IM Netball Coordinator, have shown me how important intramural sport is, and the valued place it has within the Sports Union. It brings together people from all subject areas and walks of life, providing everyone with the opportunity to get involved in sport. This last year especially has demonstrated the positive effect sport has on mental health; The combination of physical activity and socialising with your peers that IM Sport brings is such a great way of improving well-being and in general augments everyone’s university experience.

If given the opportunity, I would love to be involved in continuing to develop the Intramural Programme here at Edinburgh. For IM Netball, I set up social media pages to widen participation and keep people better informed. Next year, I would hope to implement this across each IM Sport, with particular focus on increasing interest and uptake to each sport (including continuing the ‘Give it a Go’ sessions) and keeping people up to date. I also believe the social aspect that IM Sport brings is incredibly important, and I am keen to encourage and support IM teams in broadening this, potentially by organising social events with the goal of bringing teams and IM sport closer together.

Thank you and I would love if you would consider me as your next IM Sport Coordinator.
