Growing up, I remember vividly the feelings of shame which plagued my identity as a queer, non-conforming person throughout school as a result of the toxic 'macho' culture infesting their sports clubs. Thankfully, I found compassion, support and understanding that had eluded me in sport for years in Edinburgh. I discovered a sport-loving community which both encouraged and supported my self-expression. Whilst I was fortunate enough to find this space in Edinburgh, others have not been afforded the same privilege. My position as LGBTQ+ Inclusion Officer this year has allowed me to begin addressing this, however, I would love the opportunity to continue pushing for change within the SU. We must reinvigorate the representation of minority groups with joyful stories of success and those who push the boundaries of what it means to be successful in sport, whilst addressing the lack of visibility, justice and resources available.
