For our latest Alumni of the SU profile, we interviewed Ack MacLeod, former SU President and Rugby Captain. Ack now works in asset management and has had a very successful international career! Here Ack speaks more about the impact sport has had on his career, and ultimately his life.

“I am a massive fan of sport and encourage anyone to get involved with it. Sport is a brilliant way to network and helps build confidence in meeting with people and publicly presenting in front of others, especially if you are in a committee role.

Involvement in sport can provide transferable skills -- notably providing experience working in a team and an understanding for the unique value of each person within the workplace and how their roles contribute to a team. We have recently landed the biggest account in the history of the firm, which would have been impossible without every single person’s contribution.

Additionally, sport can be a great icebreaker in business, so it’s a great topic in getting people to like you, which can ultimately advance your career. Employers generally value well-rounded people. Having extracurricular interests (not necessarily sport) demonstrates a candidate’s character beyond the resume which is very important.

Ultimately in life, sport is where you find your lifelong friends and especially if you are working internationally, one of the best ways to feel at home is to find a local sports club to join.”

In our #AlumnioftheSU we seek to discover what sporting memories stood out for former students of our Sports Union, as well as learning how sport has helped them reach positive destinations in life after Edinburgh.
